Ralph Galeano passed away at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 after a long battle with cancer.

Ralph was born in Baltimore, Maryland.

Ralph and his wife Sandy came to Homer in the 1960s when Homer was a much smaller town. He opened a marine electronics shop on Main Street in Homer. He was our source for navigation equipment for commercial vessels for years. Then he made a very successful move into commercial fishing in the 1970s.

Ralph was a pilot, an adventurer, a sportsman, an outdoorsman and a true friend. In later years he wrote several books and many articles for magazines, including a column in Grass and Grain, an agribusiness newspaper published in Manhattan, Kansas. One of his books was titled “Alaska Challenge.” This is a book about his experiences in Alaska: trapping, hunting, sport fishing, flying and commercial fishing. He also wrote Western novels.

He loved quarter horses and did very well in reigned cow pony competitions with horses he raised and trained. He competed up until he hit health problems just a few years ago. He was competing against people half his age. He did very well, building a great reputation for his horses.

Ralph was a good friend and will be missed dearly by many of us old time Homerites.

There will be a memorial for Ralph on July 6, 2019 in Florida. His wife, Sandy, plans to hold a memorial in Homer at a later date.
